blast from the not-so-distant past: Rio de Janeiro

You know, I was quite slow in posting our Brazil pictures, and we never posted Rio. I've got about 300 Rio pics, so I'm just going to post a few. Hard to believe we were there just a couple months ago! (warning to vegans--I do have some market pictures below)

Praia do Flamengo (and our silhouettes)

sunrise from our room

view from our room in the Maze, Favela Tavares Bastos

we backed up to the rainforest

Bohemia? Don't mind if I do!

gallery opening / music night at the Art Hostel

Sopa de feijão--one can never have enough beans (Look at that smile!)

market in Niteroi

Not quite as gruesome as the market in Marrakesh, Morocco--but still pretty wild

spice stands all up and down the street

this was our favorite restaurant--I think we ate here 8 times!

taken from below, this is a picture of our room. We were at the top!
(underneath the water reserve)

Cristo Redentor

studying our Portuguese aka reading the paper

yep, we hung out on the balcony a LOT

Wow, it's just gorgeous. And how cool that you backed up to the Rainforest!

Are you kissing!? Watch out! The Internet police could stick a PG-13 label on your blog... Kiddiiing! :-)
Nice trip and nice pictures. You guys make a cool couple. I would love to go to Rio one day.

Now hand-over the pictures of Brazilian girls with feathers everywhere. :-D

CCV--it was cool--there were marmosets (looks like a monkey) about 15 feet from our window!

TK--they are! Favelas are shanty towns built illegally--with illegal water, illegal electricity, illegal everything! Rio and Sao Paulo have some of the most extensive shanty towns in the world.

Zen--oh, just the feathers? You should check out the beaches ;)

I love that last shot! The city looks so alive...and then there you are muggin'!

ps, that bread from that sandwich was from WALMART's bakery! It was called a mini focaccia bread. It was really good. It came with like 6-8 in the bag. I froze the ones we didn't use, so we can pull them out for paninis as we need them.

Buffalo--thanks, man!

Tanja--thanks!! Hey--the Atlanta Art Fest is being held at Piedmont Park this weekend--what are you and Ryan doing Saturday? Good art/music show at Beep Beep around 8. Selmanaires!

Michelle--a girl after my own heart! I'd been surviving on random pieces of fried bread for a week, because NOTHING on the menu was in our dictionary, and "sin carne" in Brazil apparently means....nothing. By the second week, I got the terms for beans, bread, and vegetable down. (I still ended up eating potatoes and beer most of the time)

Doggy--sheeze, talk to my dentist. She'll cure it, sans fluoride ;)

Tommie--No Way! Here, I'm living in the city and the nearest WalMart is 20 minutes away...just like when I lived in the country. Regardless, its like Christmas, every time. Even just for the 50 cent avocados!

Just read your comment, I wish I read it earlier. Next time just give me a call.

My birth country, Guyana shares a border with Brazil but I have never been there. All your vacation pictures indicate that I should though and I think I will.
